Fish & Ships: Part Two

Young Nyackers painted their impressions of the village. Many painted the river, the mountains, or the Tappan Zee Bridge.

Several works by Nyack artist Theodore Cornu were on display.

It's a very impressive collection of items relating to life in a river village.

Old postcards, photographs, countless displays, and artwork. The Historical Society of The Nyacks has done a fantastic job.

Another great exhibit.

There's also a collection of photos of the building of the Tappan Zee, displays of local fish, the early history of The Nyacks, and much more.

Fish & Ships is a wonderful exhibition. See it this weekend July 11 & 12 (opens at 1pm) Cedar Hill Avenue at Depot Street (Between S. Broadway and Franklin Street)

After the book store closed the window disappeared and the exterior was painted.

This is how it looked just after it closed. Businesses come and go, but Ben Franklin Books will be missed. Once upon a time people purchased a book nearly every time they visited a second hand book shop. For the past few years, just browsing has become more and more popular. Support your local shops!

There are still some independent book shops in Nyack ~ Angelica's in Woolworth Way on Main Street and Pickwick on South Broadway between Main and Burd.

Carnegie Libraries have a lot of small details.

This boulder in front of the library was hauled down from Hook Mountain in the early 20th century. ~ Known as the Lincoln Boulder, since the Gettysburg Address is affixed to it.

Walking along Piermont Avenue behind the library. There are Victorian homes (some now used for businesses) pretty much surrounding the library, and most of them have nice little gardens. You can see the outline of the library in the background. Thanks to trees and gardens, the modern additions to the library don't stand out too much.

This house on Depew was moved to this spot in the 1980s from North Broadway. If you look at the left side of this picture you get a glimpse of the library's new addition.

The original 1903 library has 3 public rooms that are now crowded with our local authors collection, a grand piano, the local history collection, extra bookshelves, an architectural model of the library, and the reading room for news and magazines. There is also the check out desk and some small offices.

The rooms will be de-cluttered once the new wing is completed. These are the rooms a visitor sees first when entering the library.

The Tappan Zee Bridge

The Tappan Zee Bridge opened in December of 1955.

The bridge connects Nyack with Tarrytown, a town across the Hudson River in Westchester County.

The TZ is a little more than 3 miles long.

Businessmen on both sides of the river argued about the name ~ Tarrytowners wanted it to be called The Tarrytown - Nyack Bridge, while Nyackers preferred The Nyack -Tarrytown Bridge.

The bridge is 25 miles north of NYC and was never designed for the huge amount of daily commuter traffic it gets today. The future of the bridge is uncertain.

They have a huge selection. I got my herbs and some flowers in, but I have to go back to get some lily and gladiolia bulbs.

Yesterday's sunshine and the temperature being 90 degrees had people thinking July thoughts instead of April ones. Even the local weatherman was sad..."All good things must come to an end," he said, "temperatures will plummet back to normal for the remainder of the week."

The Rockland Fire Equipment Co. is located on South Franklin Street between Hudson and Cedar Hill.

They carry a full range of fire and safety equipment as well as emergency preparedness equipment.

Click here to visit Mr. Hill's website. If you need a gas mask or some hazmat boots, this is the man to see. The New York City Fire Department called on him during the September 11th attacks, and the first responder kits have been continually upgraded since then; always meeting the highest standards.

These fire extinguishers are in good working order and have been donated to a church that will send them to Haiti.

Travis Monuments in Nyack (Part One)

How many Travis monuments and markers are in Oak Hill Cemetery in Nyack? Thousands. It's very interesting to walk through and look at markers. Some things to look for are the artistry, the quality and type of stone, the typography used (Travis often creates their own fonts) and the overall craftsmanship of the piece.

Many people find it morbid or make unkind remarks about markers and/or cemeteries, but if it brings comfort to many people to have a place where they can sit quietly and think about a loved one who has died ~ I totally respect that. I was impressed by the attention to detail, the creativity, and the many options Travis offers in creating a monument to a loved one.

Music in Nyack

Yesterday there was much music around Nyack to enjoy.

The banjo is unique in that it's an instrument of The Americas. Its roots come from the African slaves who made instruments from gourds that were similar to a lute. The banjo and its ancestor instruments were used in this area (New York and New Jersey) in the traditional Dutch Pinkster celebrations of spring in the mid 1700's. Pinkster celebrations are still held in Sleepy Hollow and Harlem during April and May. Last year there were demonstrations of African gourd instruments and 18th century dancing for all to participate in. This year's festival will take place on May 17th at Philipsburg Manor in Sleepy Hollow.

The Golden Mushroom Restaurant ( Chinese, Japanese and Thai Cuisine) is located on 9W between Oak Street and Glenbrook Avenue. They make a nice Egg Drop Won Ton Soup, as well as six different varieties of Egg Foo Young. Singapore Mei Fun with Curry & Egg is also on the menu along with the ubiquitous Egg Roll.

They have a large fish tank for ambiance. It's very relaxing to just stand there and stare at it while waiting for your take out order.

Me and My Arrow

One of singer Harry Nilsson's haunts was a bar near the corner of Park and High, near the painted arrow in this snapshot. The bar was demolished to make room for new condos a few years back. Nilsson's home on North Broadway is also gone now. Locals who knew Harry described him as friendly with a good sense of humor. Nilsson was known for enjoying being kind of anonymous ~ striking up conversations with people wherever he went. A friend of his, who was a bartender back in those days, said that Nilsson drank a very dry martini. Dubbed Harry's In & Out Martini, the vermouth went into the shaker for a few seconds and then was poured out.

I wonder if Harry's ghost (if he visits Nyack) sees what was here before the condos. Little businesses and a few houses. Does he walk along the streets of Nyack back in his own time rather than in ours?

Some corners are much the same regardless of time passing. People who've lived in various locations around Nyack have told me that the town is filled with ghosts. Harry Nilsson is certainly still with us in spirit.

Born in Brooklyn, Nilsson bounced back and forth between New York and California. He preferred a climate with four distinct seasons, and had a fondness for this area.

Someone told me the cover art of one Nilsson album showed what his house in Nyack looked like. Having never seen his house, I can't say for sure, but the cover art does show a house that would blend right in here.

A Chocolate Tradition Near Nyack

Time to take a trip just a few miles north of Nyack to the Village of Haverstraw. Lucas Candies has been making fine chocolates for 113 years and when you visit their shop and chocolate factory at 6 Main Street you'll meet fourth generation chocolate makers who take great pride in their creations.

Not just bunnies~
( although there are many different kinds of bunnies) a wide selection of chocolate goodies. Elegant and unique gift boxes, and lots of sweet surprises.

I purchased an Easter basket for somebunny special, and the basket itself is made out of chocolate! You can also order fresh chocolate covered strawberries, and the dark chocolate coconut cream eggs are incredibly good.

Kids can experience hands on chocolate making and can host their own birthday parties at Lucas Candies.

Directions from Nyack: Just take Rt 9W north to the Village of Haverstraw turning right on Main St. into the village (at the red caboose by the railroad depot.) Lucas Candies is a few blocks down on the right, just past Broadway.

In the olden days people used to walk uphill from the river for ten blocks or so... up Main Street, up on the hill. ( All of the snaps shown here are of the north side of Main between Highland (Rt. 9W) and Midland.)

I rarely see anyone walking up this far anymore.

Pretty quiet up here now.

Once there was a shop filled with old cookie jars and collectibles. The buildings are neatly kept and have a lot of character.

This place is on the corner of Main and Midland, and I can't remember what it was.

Hillside Life

Spotting views like this makes walking in Nyack very pleasant.

Life on the side of a little bit of a hill. Gardening on a hillside has its challenges too. Terraced gardens and hidden bowers.

A born lover of hills and mountains, I still know all the round about ways to walk to avoid the steepest hills, but rarely do avoid them-- the steeper the hill the better the view. Even when spring comes and the trees leaf out and fill in many views, our hills hold little secrets in their shady pockets. (This pic as taken a few months ago. Winter views are much appreciated.)

Living in Nyack keeps us young. We are forever going up slopes and around curves, down to the river and back up again, slick in rain, and a challenge on those rare icy days, but always well worth the effort.

Extra steps cannot be avoided. This is not a flat life -- not at all.

Walking down to the river... always a pleasant journey. A river town and a hilly town.

Thursday Theme: Mineral

Nyack State Beach

I could write about the minerals found at Nyack State Beach, and the cliffs of The Palisades, but today I just wanted to mention the mineral iron, and the wonderful abandoned iron mine hikes you can take not far from Nyack. Iron mining began in the 1700s in Rockland and Orange Counties and continued until well after the Civil War. (Easier and more lucrative mining was found in the Great Lakes Region, so the mines here were abandoned.) The mine shafts are filled in, but there are interesting ruins and signs that people once lived along these iron mine paths ( old foundations and other signs.) Much of the population left on their own, but some were simply bought out, so that our current park system could work properly. Our area has a large amount of protected greenspace that is easy to enjoy ~ through hiking without crossing private property on scenic trails. There are many short loops for family friendly hikes and many guide books available locally.

A few years ago I visited Clove Furnace which is part of a short trail loop in the Sterling Forest area, and learned a bit about the old iron industry.

Took some snaps of the beautiful buildings on Main Street yesterday morning. The Skylark is in the building on the right.

I Had a cup of tea and a side order of French toast at The Skylark yesterday.

Main Street again. Having a sign thats says Woolworth is not the same as actually having a Woolworth Store. It's a nice looking sign, so we kept it. A used bookshop, several boutiques, and a photography studio now occupy the large space along with two eateries.

Inside St. Paul's on the corner of South Broadway and Division Avenue. The Spanish congregation is celebrating their anniversary on May 3rd.

(There are a few more places of worship in Nyack, The Hollingsworth Family Church, St. Thomas Lutheran, Churches in West Nyack, an outdoor chapel on Midland Avenue in Upper Nyack. Religious services are sometimes held on Hook Mountain... I haven't photographed all the churches or meeting places as yet. There are two mosques approx. ten miles from Nyack, and many more synagogues.)

Services are sometimes held at Nyack State Beach.

A commenter mentioned the Cathedral of the Pines. Definitely worth a look.

Walk About with Tot

This morning, after breakfast I went for a walk with a friend who loves long walks.

We wandered along the river. It was really sunny but really cold today.

We visited Charles the dog on Main Street.

We stopped to look at all the neat stuff in the trash and jumped on some discarded foam.

Bear Mountain State Park ~ Bonus Post

There's a lot to do at nearby Bear Mountain State Park. Loads of trails to hike on--Including the Appalachian Trail. The Bear Mountain Bridge is part of the AT. (Update _This is an Elk Head made by Tiffany's for the State Park. The elk herd that was introduced to the park died out years ago--this is the only elk left on the scene.)

The Bear Mountain Inn is being renovated now.

Rockland County may be the smallest county in NY state, but about 1/3 of it is protected parkland. The very first section of the Appalachian Trail was created here.

Lots of lakes to enjoy. You can paddle boat, canoe, or go out in a rowboat. No motor boats here, it's nice and quiet.

Riding a bear is always a fun option. The Merry Go Round at Bear Mountain Park is indoors.

Local turtles include the box, the snapping, the muck, the red-eared, the spotted, Blanding's terrapin, and... I know I'm forgetting one or two. This photo was taken yesterday at The Bear Mountain Zoo, the only zoo you'll walk through while on the AT. It's an old fashioned zoo with local animals, and wounded animals are rehabilitated.

March is Tricky in Nyack

Early on, it was chilly and raining. Delivery people were out, including our favorite UPS guy, Fred.

Raindrops were everywhere. "March is Tricky" someone said.

Many people hurried home for a cup of tea.

Later the sky began to change, and Nyack resembled Miami Beach (in one area, anyway.)

The cooler temps had no effect on this young woman.

Feeding the Birds

The birds at the park saw this woman's car approaching and flew over to greet her. They knew who she was and that she had some birdseed for them. The rain didn't stop her from bringing them a treat.

Yesterday was another fine day in Nyack and lots of folks were outdoors just to take advantage of the beautiful weather

Working outdoors can be great! Another sign is installed to remind drivers that pedestrians have the right of way at every crosswalk.

Even her Barbies wanted to be outdoors

I'm sure this guy is out all year long, but cycling has got to be a lot more fun on a fine day. Don't forget to stop and ingest the carbs.

Not Gloomy in Nyack

The mildness of the day kept yesterday from being gloomy. Sitting by the river it was anything but gloomy.

People were out and about all day. I walked for hours.

The sky was filled with clouds, but it didn't rain.

Yesterday at the boat launch ~ a very short film.
