Statues Near Nyack

Statue and helicopter.

This is a pretty big statue, almost fifty feet tall, facing the Hudson River. It was cast in Italy, and from 1959 -1977 it was in White Plains, NY on a college campus. It was donated to the shrine and moved across the river to Rockland County.

On Sunday afternoon it was warm and mild. The woods were empty except for squirrels and statues, and I was able to enjoy the silence and sunshine. It was nearly 50 degrees, so walking through a snowy woods was extra nice. Many of the paths were hard to find since the snow was undisturbed in some areas, but it was the nicest walk I've had there. (In summer mosquitos can be bothersome, and joggers running through are a little off-putting.)

Since Nyack is located in the smallest county in New York State, it's easy to get around to the other towns.

You can walk for hours in the woods at the Don Bosco Retreat / Marian Shrine on Filors lane in Stony Point. It's a great place to meditate or watch squirrels chase each other. (I've never seen so many squirrels in one place before.) Plenty of statues and benches. You don't have to be a Christian or a Catholic to visit and enjoy the place. I was happy to come upon all sorts of statues, even a little Buddha statue deep in the woods; the shrine is open to everyone for quiet contemplation.
