Subsy's Snaps of Nyack

Here are some snaps Subsy Squirrel took two weekends ago around town. He liked this front yard.
Another view of same.

South Broadway. I always appreciate Subsy's snaps.

An old Victorian on South Broadway, next to the Library. I wanted to post these even though they're two weeks old. I hope to get some people shots next week.

Snacky Niche

A place to park your bike and park yourself with a croissant and a cafe au lait. This niche is just outside Didier & Dumas Patisserie & Coffee Cafe.

The niche is on Main Street between these two buildings.

In Memory of J.

It's a rainy day and the lilacs that bloom a bit late (like Sensation shown here) are fragrant.

The arrival of Spring brings the annual return of songbirds, an event that occurs like clockwork in the natural world. It amazes and inspires, no matter how many times we see it happen.

For many people, the mere presence of birds represents their only daily contact with wildlife. The parks, greenways and wetlands these birds require contribute to the quality of the human environment.

Sadly, however, migratory birds are in decline in many places. They face serious survival challenges because of habitat loss, collisions with man-made structures, predation by domestic animals and exposure to pesticides and other contaminants. Scientists are attempting to answer basic questions about the health of many species in attempts to thwart their decline.

Today , May 8th, is International Migratory Bird Day, a celebration of migratory birds in North America. We hope to draw attention to the plight of these creatures, and create heightened awareness that the health of bird populations is an excellent way to assess the overall health of our environment. They are truly the canaries in the coal mine.

Take a few minutes today, to think what this country would be like without the incredible beauty and the rich biological diversity that birds provide. You can take steps to protect them.

• Provide habitat for birds when landscaping your yard by using native (especially fruit-bearing) plants.

• Reduce your use of lawn and garden pesticides and fertilizers - together with farm use of chemicals in the United States, they contribute to the deaths of an estimated 67 million birds a year.

• If you are a coffee drinker, consider buying shade-grown coffee. These type of coffee plantations provide more habitat for migratory birds in their southern wintering grounds so they might survive to return and breed in our region. You can get more information on this from the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center's web site:

Been There, Learned to Share

Most of us have experienced sharing spaces with others. From those first roommates called siblings, to college dorms to first apartments ... sharing the space could be tough or it could be heavenly. It all depended on the blend.
